Environmental Responsibility in Focus at EBACE2018

The worldwide business aviation community continually seeks methods to reduce its environmental impact, as demonstrated by the 2009 Business Aviation Commitment on Climate Change (BACCC). This responsibility also extends across several facets of the 2018 European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (EBACE2018) taking place 29-31 May in Geneva, Switzerland.

 

“While the BACCC focuses on aircraft operations, and does not specifically extend to activities beyond that, the agreement does serve as a foundation for continuous environmental improvement throughout other aspects of the industry, including events like EBACE2018,” said Chris Strong, NBAA’s senior vice president, conventions and membership.

For example, longtime EBACE host facility Geneva’s Palexpo convention center is a model for environmental responsibility and sustainable business practices. Atop the Palexpo roof are 15,000 photovoltaic panels that form an expansive solar array capable of producing 4.2 gigawatt-hours per year, enough electricity for 1,350 households.

On the show floor, representatives from EBACE2018 work together with exhibits provider Freeman EMEA to define and achieve several sustainability goals for the event, from optimized show equipment and transportation alternatives to reducing the number of vehicles required on-site. Locally recycled show carpet is used throughout the exhibit hall, and show graphics and displays are intended to be reused or recycled toward a long-term goal of a “zero-landfill” event strategy.

Additionally, Geneva Airport (GVA) – the location for the EBACE2018 static display of aircraft – recently earned the highest level (3+) in the Airport Carbon Accreditation campaign created by Airports Council International Europe. The third busiest business aviation airport in Europe, GVA is the 37th airport in the world to achieve carbon neutrality.

Boeing 737 MAX 9 Awarded FAA Certification

First deliveries of the newest member of the 737 MAX family to start in the coming weeks

Seattle, February 16, 2018: Boeing announced that the 737 MAX 9 has received an amended type certificate (ATC) from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), officially certifying the airplane for commercial service. This certification marks the culmination of a successful flight test program that began in March 2017with two Boeing flight test airplanes. Boeing is now in the final stages of preparing the MAX 9 for its first delivery to launch customer Lion Air Group.

The 737 MAX 9 is designed for a capacity of up to 220 passengers and a maximum range of 3,550 nautical miles. With three additional seat rows compared to the 737 MAX 8, this airplane provides operators added capacity while maximizing profitability within their network.

The 737 MAX family is designed to offer customers exceptional performance, with lower per-seat costs and an extended range that is opening up new destinations in the single-aisle market. The 737 MAX incorporates the latest CFM International LEAP-1B engines, Advanced Technology winglets, Boeing Sky Interior, large flight deck displays and other features to deliver the highest efficiency, reliability and passenger comfort in the single-aisle market.

Airbus A321LR  Demonstrates Nonstop Paris-New York Flight

Improved aerodynamics and efficient jet engines open new horizons for airlines and passengers

Paris, February 14, 2018: Airbus’ latest long range airliner, the A321LR, marked a new milestone with a Paris-to-New York nonstop flight. The aircraft is powered by two CFM International LEAP-1A engines. The intercontinental flight is part of nearly 100 hours of flight tests in advance of the jetliner’s airworthiness certification, expected in the second quarter of 2018.
The LR designation is for ‘long range’ and with good reason: the A321LR has the longest range of any single-aisle commercial aircraft today, able to fly 7,400 kilometers nonstop.
Its ‘long legs’ are signified by the No. 1 A321LR’s livery featuring the Eiffel Tower and Statue of Liberty – a representation of the Paris/New York route flown yesterday from Le Bourget Airport near the French capital to the New York region’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. The aircraft also is well suited for intra-regional airline segments in Asia, the United States and other markets.
The A321LR’s unrivalled efficiency – driven by aerodynamic improvements and state-of-the-art fuel-efficient turbofan jet engines – has established its popularity among airlines, with Airbus already notching more than 100 orders for the aircraft; the first customer delivery is expected in late 2018. The interior of the A321LR will be passenger-pleasing as well, with unmatched comfort from the widest single-aisle cabin in the sky, comfortable seats, extra-large luggage bins and the latest in-flight-entertainment technology.
Operators can outfit the A321LR in state-of-the-art two-class configurations with full-flat seats for true long-haul comfort, or in a single-class layout capable of accommodating up to 240 passengers.
The A321LR is the next evolutionary step of Airbus’ twin-engine A321neo that has captured more than an 80 percent share in its middle-of-the-market category. Airbus expects the A321LR to continue this trend, as it offers a thoroughly modern replacement for the large number of ageing narrowbody and widebody aircraft facing retirement in the coming years.

Boeing 737 MAX 10 Reaches Firm Configuration

Airplane on track for deliveries starting in 2020 timeframe

Singapore, Feb. 6, 2018: Boeing’s 737 MAX 10 has reached a major milestone as the MAX program completed firm configuration on the airplane. This means engineers now have all the design requirements in place for what will be the largest member of Boeing’s single-aisle family. Boeing announced the achievement today at the Singapore Airshow.
“The steps we’ve taken to reach this point ensure the MAX 10 will be the most efficient and profitable single-aisle airplane the market has ever seen,” said Randy Tinseth, vice president of Marketing, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “We’re working closely with our airline customers to deliver on the performance and efficiency benefits we’ve promised.”
The 737 MAX 10, which will use a stretched fuselage that is 66 inches longer than the 737 MAX 9, now moves into the detailed design phase prior to the start of production. The airplane will carry up to 230 passengers, delivering 5 percent lower trip costs and 5 percent lower seat-mile costs compared to its competition.
The MAX 10 is coming off a strong launch at the 2017 Paris Air Show. The airplane now has more than 416 orders and commitments from 18 customers across the globe. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in the 2020 timeframe.
The MAX 10 will soon join the rest of the 737 MAX family. The first MAX 7 rolled out of the paint hangar earlier this week and will soon start flight tests. The MAX 8 has been in service since 2017, already carrying more than 1.8 million passengers. And the first MAX 9 is scheduled to be delivered in the coming weeks.

UPS Orders 14 Boeing 747-8 Cargo Jets

Additional aircraft to support rapid growth

Atlanta, February 1, 2018: UPS today announced it has ordered 14 Boeing 747-8 cargo jets and four new Boeing 767 aircraft to provide additional capacity in response to accelerating demand for the company’s air services. All of the new aircraft will be added to the existing fleet and no existing aircraft are being replaced. 
The aircraft will be delivered on an expedited schedule, building on the company’s 2016 order of 14 Boeing 747-8 freighters. All 32 of the jets will be delivered by the end of 2022, adding more than 9 million pounds of cargo capacity.  UPS’s global airline network includes more than 500 owned and leased aircraft. UPS received three new 747-8 freighters in 2017.
“Our intra-U.S. next-day and deferred air shipments are expanding to record levels, and UPS’s International segment has produced four consecutive quarters of double-digit export shipment growth,” said David Abney, UPS chairman and CEO. “To support this strong customer demand, we continue to invest in additional air capacity, providing the critical link our customers need to markets around the world.”
In addition to growing customer demand for express services, recent US tax reform legislation is enabling UPS to utilize tax savings to significantly increase capital investments and to make them earlier than previously planned.
“As we celebrate the 30th anniversary of UPS Airlines today, we are seeing unprecedented demand for our air products,” said UPS Airlines President Brendan Canavan. “The new freighters will allow us to continue upsizing aircraft on routes and will create a cascading effect that will boost capacity on regional routes around the world.”
The 747-8 freighter carries 46 shipping containers, 34 on its main deck and 12 in its lower compartments.  The -8 has a cargo capacity of 307,600 pounds, or approximately 30,000 packages and a range of 4,200 nautical miles. The new -8 aircraft line has a strong industry safety, reliability, and environmental record.   The Boeing 767 freighter has cargo capacity of 132,200 pounds and capacity for 31 air containers, 24 on the main deck and 7 in its lower compartments.  It has a range of approximately 3,000 nautical miles.  UPS currently operates 59 Boeing 767 aircraft.

Joint European Efforts to Improve Aircraft Design

Airbus partners with ONERA and DLR on next-gen Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) capabilities

Singapore, February 1, 2018: Following a recent joint agreement in Toulouse, Airbus is partnering with ONERA, a French aerospace research centre, and DLR, the German aerospace research centre, with the goal of jointly developing common next-generation computational fluid dynamics (CFD) capabilities for advanced airflow prediction, which will play a key role in the development of any future aircraft. These new CFD capabilities, once they are validated and mature, will provide engineers with a powerful tool – in particular to simulate aerodynamics for very complex aircraft manoeuvres – encompassing the entire flight envelope. This partnership brings together France and Germany’s best talents in CFD technology and will play an important role in securing long-term collaborative development projects. In particular, it will allow ONERA, DLR and Airbus to accelerate their activities far beyond what a single entity could achieve, with the ultimate goal to design the best aircraft possible.

Boeing’s 787-10 Dreamliner Cleared for Commercial Service by FAA

25 % better fuel per seat and emissions than current airplanes

Everett, Wash., Jan. 22, 2018: Boeing announced today the 787-10 Dreamliner received an amended type certificate (ATC) from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), clearing the airplane for commercial service.

The awarding of ATC caps a successful flight test program that began in March 2017 and involved three flight test airplanes that accumulated about 900 test hours. Boeing’s flight test program team took the airplanes through a series of tests to confirm the airplane’s handling, systems and overall performance met internal requirements and certification standards to ensure safety of flight.

Other aviation regulatory agencies are expected to follow the FAA’s lead and certify the airplane before it enters service.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is a family of super-efficient airplanes with new passenger-pleasing features. As a stretch of the 787-9, the 787-10 retains over 95 percent commonality while adding seats and cargo capacity, setting a new benchmark for fuel efficiency and operating economics at 25 percent better fuel per seat and emissions than the airplanes it will replace. The airplane can fly 330 passengers, in a typical two-class configuration, up to 6,430 nautical miles (11,910 km).

To date, Boeing has over 170 orders for the 787-10 from nine customers worldwide. First delivery is expected to Singapore Airlines in the first half of 2018.

‘Go Electric’: Heathrow Welcomes 50th Electric Vehicle

Airport has the highest density of EV charging infrastructure in Europe

Heathrow Airport, December 7,2017: Heathrow has reached a key milestone in its pledge to ‘Go Electric’ with the delivery of the 50th electric vehicle to the airport’s fleet. This is a key step in Heathrow’s promise to make all of its cars and small vans electric or plug-in hybrid by 2020 to help improve air quality around the airport. The 50 electric vehicles reduce the airport’s fleet emissions by 165 tonnes CO2/year, equivalent to the amount of energy used by 18 homes annually.

This announcement comes as Heathrow celebrates receiving two awards for their fleet. The airport recently received the award for Ultra-Low Emission Infrastructure at the Energy Saving Trust’s 2017 Fleet Hero Awards. Heathrow won the accolade for the airport’s achievements growing the current charging infrastructure, which is now the site with the highest density of charging infrastructure in Europe. Heathrow’s has over 80 charging points available to passengers, colleagues and airside vehicles.

Since pledging to ‘Go Electric’, Heathrow has spent over £4 million in charging infrastructure, with a total of more than £5 million committed to be spent by the end of 2018. Heathrow is also actively working in collaboration with TfL (Transport for London) to install seven rapid charging points for black cabs before the end of 2017. These rapid charging points, some of the first in London, will support the Mayor’s requirements for all newly licensed black cabs to be either electric or plug in hybrid by  Jan 1, 2018. These chargers will be installed in Heathrow’s Taxi Feeder Park and will work over three times faster than the average charger.

This move, along with Heathrow’s efforts to provide new public transport options into the airport like Crossrail and a potential Western Rail access, will reduce emissions and congestion related to airport traffic, and set a bold direction towards a future of sustainable aviation.

Since committing to a new sustainability strategy, Heathrow 2.0, the airport has set out to establish itself as a world-leading airport in reducing emissions from all sources of activity, both on and off airport. Heathrow 2.0 is the airport’s plan for sustainable growth.  Heathrow 2.0 will allow the airport to expand to meet demand in a way that creates a positive impact on the community, environment and economy.

ICAO’s International Civil Aviation Day on December 7

Strong commitment to historic emissions control standards 

The purpose of International Civil Aviation Day is to help generate and reinforce worldwide awareness of the importance of international civil aviation to the social and economic development of States, and of the unique role of ICAO in helping States to cooperate and realize a truly global rapid transit network at the service of all mankind.

In the Environmental domain especially in 2016, the aviation community’s strong commitment to come together on behalf of our planet has helped aviation to once again show its strength and leadership through new and historic emissions control Standards and agreements. 

As the UN and world nations have now adopted Agenda 2030, and embarked on a new era in global sustainable development, the importance of aviation as an engine of global connectivity has never been more relevant to the Chicago Convention’s objectives to look to international flight as a fundamental enabler of global peace and prosperity.

Since 2014, every five years, coinciding with ICAO anniversaries, the ICAO Council establishes a special anniversary theme for International Civil Aviation Day. Between these anniversary years, Council representatives select a single theme for the full four-year intervening period. For 2015-2018 inclusive the Council has selected the following theme:  “Working Together to Ensure No Country is Left Behind”

International Civil Aviation Day was established in 1994 as part of ICAO’s 50th anniversary activities. In 1996, pursuant to an ICAO initiative and with the assistance of the Canadian Government, the United Nations General Assembly officially recognized 7 December as International Civil Aviation Day in the UN system.

First A330-300P2F Enters Service with DHL

Express operations benefit from new-generation efficient mid-sized freighter

DHL Express has become the first operator to take delivery of the A330-300 Passenger-to-Freighter (P2F) converted aircraft from Elbe Flugzeugwerke (EFW), the joint venture between ST Aerospace and Airbus. This delivery, which took place at EFW’s freighter conversion facilities in Dresden, follows the successful completion of test flights in October and awarding of the Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) in November. DHL Express has firm orders for eight A330-300P2F units in total, with additional options to receive another 10.

“DHL Express is very excited to be bringing the first A330-300 P2F into commercial operation within our international air network,” said Geoff Kehr, SVP, Global Air Fleet Management, DHL Express. “The first aircraft is scheduled to strengthen our Asia Pacific air network, bringing added capacity and increased efficiency to a market where we are seeing dynamic express volume growth.”

The A330P2F conversion program, launched in 2012, is a collaboration between ST Aerospace, Airbus and their joint venture EFW. ST Aerospace, as the program and technical lead for the engineering development phase, is responsible for applying for the STCs from EASA and the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Airbus contributes to the program with OEM data and certification support, while EFW leads the industrialization phase and marketing for the freighter conversion program.

“With its large internal volume and unbeatable economics, the A330-300P2F allows operators to step up capacity in markets where existing mid-sized freighters are becoming too small,” said Christopher Buckley, Airbus EVP Sales.

The A330P2F program has two variants – the A330-200P2F and the larger A330-300P2F. The latter is ideal for serving the international express B2B and e-commerce cargo markets, which typically have a higher volume and lower density. The aircraft can carry up to 62 metric tons over 3,650 nautical miles, while offering 20 percent more cargo volume and lower cost-per-ton than other available freighter aircraft types with a similar range.
