China Airlines Takes Delivery of A350 XWB Powered with Biofuel Mix

Taiwanese carrier joins sustainable fuel initiative for Airbusdelivery flights 

Toulouse, November 30, 2017: China Airlines of Taiwan has become the second airline to join a program to use a blend of traditional and sustainable biofuels to power aircraft for delivery flights from Airbus. The aircraft involved is the tenth A350-900 for China Airlines, which left the manufacturer’s delivery center in Toulouse today for its new home in Taipei with a 10 percent blend of sustainable jet fuel in its tanks.

The sustainable fuel option for delivery flights has been developed by Airbus in association with Air Total, the aviation subsidiary of the global energy operator. In order to stock the eco-friendly product, Air Total has installed the first ever biofuel station adjacent to the Airbus delivery center in Toulouse. A total of 21 aircraft have so far been delivered by Airbus since the facility was inaugurated in May 2016.

“China Airlines is proud to have taken delivery of its first aircraft to be partially powered by sustainable biofuel,” China Airlines ChairmanHo, Nuan-Hsuan said.  “This reflects our clear commitment to reduce the impact of aviation on the environment and to be among those airlines leading the way to use alternative fuel sources. With the A350 XWB in our fleet we are already significantly reducing our carbon footprint and we are excited that this can be extended even further with the use of new biofuels.”

“We are excited to welcome China Airlines to our sustainable fuel program,” said Frederic Eychenne, Head of New Energies at Airbus. “Today’s delivery demonstrates once again that biofuels are a reality today. We are moving towards the regular use of new and sustainable energy sources in our industry, helping to meet the commitments of the international civil aviation community.”

In addition to Toulouse, Airbus is now working towards introducing the option for the use of biofuels for delivery flights from its facilities in Hamburg, Germany and Mobile, US. First deliveries from these sites are set to begin in 2018. The option will also subsequently become available from the company’s facility in Tianjin, China.

Reflecting its strong commitment towards eco-efficiency, Airbus was the first manufacturer to offer its customers the option of delivering new aircraft with a blend of sustainable fuel. As part of its wider environmental strategy, the company Airbus intends to continue its efforts by collaborating with all stakeholders in the biofuels sector.

Airbus to equip A350 XWB pylon with bracket

 
Toulouse, September 13, 2017: Airbus completed for the first time the installation of a titanium 3D-printed bracket on an in-series production A350 XWB. The bracket, built using additive-layer manufacturing (ALM) technologies (also known as 3D-printing), is part of the aircraft pylon, the junction section between wings and engines.
Additive-layer manufacturing “grows” products from a fine base material powder – such as aluminum, titanium, stainless steel and plastics – by adding thin layers of material in incremental stages, which enables complex components to be produced directly from computer-aided design (CAD) information.
3D-printed parts are already flying on some of Airbus A320neo and A350 XWB test aircraft. These include metal printed cabin brackets and bleed pipes.
Among the major benefits of 3D-printed parts are weight savings, lower costs and improved manufacturing methods.

Airbus Delivers its 100th A350 XWB

Toulouse, July 26, 2017: Airbus has delivered its 100th A350 XWB, just some 30 months after the first delivery of the world’s most modern widebody aircraft in December 2014. The 100th aircraft delivered is an A350-900 for China Airlines.

“The 100th A350 XWB milestone comes as we reach our fastest widebody production ramp-up, on track to meet the target of 10 A350 deliveries per month by the end of 2018,” said Fabrice Bregier, Airbus COO and President Commercial Aircraft. “We are especially proud to deliver today’s aircraft to our long-standing customer China Airlines. The A350 is setting new standards for long haul air travel in terms of efficiency and comfort, thus being the perfect aircraft for China Airlines to expand its long-haul network.”

To date the A350 has been delivered to 14 airlines worldwide and is flying with an outstanding operational reliability rate of 99%*. “This is a remarkable statistic at this early stage of the program,” Fabrice Bregier adds.

The A350 XWB features the latest aerodynamic design, carbon fiber fuselage and wings, plus new fuel-efficient Rolls-Royce engines. Together, these latest technologies translate into unrivalled levels of operational efficiency, with a 25 per cent reduction in fuel burn and emissions, and significantly lower maintenance costs.

Heathrow: Record Passenger Numbers, Skytrax-Award and Support for a 3rd Runway  

Heathrow, January 11, 2017: Larger, quieter and more efficient aircraft continued to be a driver for growth in passenger volumes at Heathrow. In 2016, around 40% of Heathrow’s long haul passengers travelled on cleaner and quieter new generation aircraft, such as Airbus A380s, A350s and Boeing 787 Dreamliners – up from around 25% in 2015 and helping to improve sustainability and to reduce the airport’s impact on local communities.

At the same time Heathrow was named ‘Best Airport in Western Europe’ by its passengers at the annual Skytrax Global Airport AwardsIn 2016, Heathrow reported a record 76 million passengers (+1%) alongside 1.5 million tons of cargo (+3%) travelling through the UK’s leading hub.

Also in 20126, the Government announced its support for a new runway at Heathrow – the first full-length runway in the south east of the UK since the second world war.

Toulouse, January 11, 2017: Airbus’ commercial aircraft deliveries in 2016 were up for the 14th year in a row, reaching a new company record of 688 aircraft delivered to 82 customers.

Deliveries were more than eight percent higher than the previous record of 635 set in 2015. These included 545 single aisle A320 Family of which 68 were A320neo, 66 A330s, 49  A350 XWBs and 28 A380s. Over 40 percent of single aisle deliveries were the larger A321 models.

Airbus achieved 731 from 51 customers of which eight are new. These included 607 single aisle and 124 wide-body aircraft. At the end of 2016, Airbus’ overall backlog stood at 6,874 aircraft valued at US$1,018 billion at list prices.

“We delivered on our objectives in a challenging environment, proving our ramp-up readiness for the future. I salute all our teams on this outstanding achievement,” said Fabrice Brégier, President of Airbus Commercial Aircraft and Chief Operating Officer of Airbus. “Our strong operational performance combined with a robust market eager to place orders and take deliveries of aircraft in all sizes are now an excellent springboard for our next steps: Boosting deliveries, harnessing the advantages of Digital and extending our service portfolio globally.”

Notable milestones in 2016 included the delivery of Airbus 10,000th aircraft – an A350 XWB and the successful first flight of the largest member of the program: the A350-1000. Airbus also commenced deliveries of both engine variants of the A320neo, the world’s best-selling single aisle aircraft. Meanwhile, the Pratt & Whitney powered A321neo was certified and the first US-assembled aircraft, an A321, was delivered from Mobile, Alabama.

Other milestones included the entry into service of the first A330 regional and the start of construction of the China A330 Completion and Delivery Centre, while the A330neo commenced assembly in the Final Assembly Line. First A350-1000 successfully completes first flight

The first of three A350-1000 development aircraft to fly – MSN059 – has landed at Toulouse-Blagnac Airport France at 15.00hrs local time after successfully completing its first flight which lasted four hours and 18 minutes.

The crew in the cockpit on board this flight comprised: Hugues van der Stichel, Experimental Test Pilot; Frank Chapman, Experimental Test Pilot and Gérard Maisonneuve, Test-Flight Engineer. Furthermore, monitoring all the test parameters at the Flight-Test-Instrumentation (FTI) station behind the cockpit were: Patrick du Ché, Head of Flight & Integration Tests; Emanuele Costanzo, Head of A350 Development Flight Tests; and Stéphane Vaux, Flight-Test Engineer.

Powered by Rolls-Royce’s new Trent XWB-97 engines, the aircraft traversed south-western France, during which the crew explored the aircraft’s handling and flight envelope. The aircraft was accompanied by a chase plane to observe and film the various manoeuvres. Its progress was monitored by experts on the ground in real-time via a direct telemetry link.

Airbus President and CEO Fabrice Brégier said: “We have seen today the world’s most modern and efficient passenger aircraft – the A350-1000 – in action for the very first time, adding soon to the successful A350 Family. My congratulations and thanks go to all the teams who have contributed to make today’s flight happen.” He added: “We are equally pleased that many customers have witnessed this important milestone today together with us – here from our headquarters in Toulouse.”

Benefitting from the experience of the original A350-900 test campaign (accomplished in 2014), the A350-1000’s development programme will be shorter – under one year for the three aircraft. MSN059’s duties for performance testing will include exploration of the flight envelope, handling qualities, loads and braking. The second aircraft to fly, MSN071, will also be tasked with performance evaluation, which will encompass braking, powerplant, systems and autopilot. The third and final aircraft to fly – MSN065 – will be equipped with a cabin and will evaluate the cabin and air systems. MSN065 will also perform the “early long flights” and route-proving. The overall campaign will culminate in the type’s certification followed by its entry into airline service in the second half of 2017 with first operator Qatar Airways – the largest A350-1000 customer to date with 37 on order.

The A350-1000 is the latest member of the Airbus leading widebody family, together with the A330neo, offering unprecedented levels of operating efficiency, low noise and true long-range capability. As well as having a longer fuselage to accommodate 40 more passengers than the A350-900, the A350-1000 also features a modified wing trailing-edge, new six-wheel main landing gears and more powerful Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines. The A350-1000 embodies all of the fuel efficiency and ‘Airspace’ cabin comfort of the original A350-900 – but with extra size perfectly tailored for our customers on some of their busiest long-haul routes. To date 11 customers from five continents have placed orders for a total of 195 A350-1000s.

Successful Noise Reduction at Heathrow Airport

‘Fly Quiet’ league table ranks 50 airlines on noise

Heathrow, November 15, 2016:  A new report released by Heathrow ranks British Airways’ short-haul fleet as the quietest flying to the west London airport. The latest Heathrow Fly Quiet league table also shows the impact of the airport’s policies incentivizing airlines to fly their cleanest and quietest aircraft to Heathrow as the number of super-quiet Airbus A350 flights doubled and Boeing 787 Dreamliner flights have risen by 19 per cent.

Qatar Airways last week became the third carrier to fly the super-quiet Airbus plane, which made its debut last year, joining Finnair and Ethiopian on the London route, increasing the daily number of A350 flights to six. The A350’s noise footprint is about 50% smaller than its predecessor models and is contributing to a better noise environment for local communities. Twenty-one of Heathrow’s airlines have ordered A350s.

Meanwhile, Boeing 787 Dreamliner flights increased from 6,300 to 7,500 over the three-month period to October.

British Airways short-haul – the airport’s biggest – is also the quietest fleet flying into Heathrow, with the UK’s flag carrier reporting exceptional performance thanks to noise-reducingenhancements to its fleet of Airbus A320 planes and operating procedures that take noise over the ground into consideration.

Singapore Airlines climbed 21 places to 19th thanks to its use of quieter aircraft and improved procedures.

Airbus Celebrates the Delivery of its 10,000th Aircraft

Enders: “The world’s most modern and comprehensive aircraft family”

Toulouse, October 14, 2016: Airbus today celebrated the delivery of its 10,000th aircraft – an A350-900 for Singapore Airlines. The milestone event was marked by a special ceremony in Toulouse hosted by Airbus Group CEO Tom Enders and attended by Goh Choon Phong, CEO of Singapore Airlines.

The aircraft delivered today is the sixth A350-900 for Singapore Airlines, out of a total order for 67. Featuring a special “10,000th Airbus” logo, the aircraft will be used to launch the airline’s new non-stop services between Singapore and San Francisco later this month.

The 10,000th delivery comes as Airbus achieves its highest level of production ever and is on track to deliver at least 650 aircraft this year.

“Since our earliest days innovation has been at the heart of everything we do at Airbus,” said Tom Enders, Airbus Group CEO. “This has seen us develop what is today the world’s most modern and comprehensive aircraft family. Singapore Airlines placed its first order with Airbus in 1979 and over the years the carrier and its subsidiaries have ordered every successive model produced by the manufacturer. Today the mainline carrier operates the A330, A350 XWB and A380, while its regional subsidiaries Silkair and Tigerair fly aircraft from the single aisle A320 Family.

Airbus delivered its first aircraft to Air France

Airbus delivered its first aircraft, an A300B2, to Air France on 10 May 1974. Initially working exclusively in the widebody sector with the A300 and A310, the manufacturer moved into the single aisle market in the mid-1980s with the launch of the best-selling A320. Setting new standards in aircraft design, technologies introduced on the A320 were subsequently incorporated on the A330 and A340 in the early 1990s, marking the first time that single aisle and widebody aircraft benefitted from similar operational characteristics.

This high level of design commonality is unique to Airbus aircraft types and has been retained across the company’s product line ever since, including on the double deck A380 and the all-new long range A350 XWB which entered service last year.

Through the company’s process of continuous product improvement, the Airbus product line has been regularly enhanced over the years with each subsequent development bringing significant benefits in terms of fuel efficiency, operational reliability and passenger comfort. In recent years this has recently seen the company invest in the A320neo Family, which entered commercial service this year, and the A330neo Family, currently in development and with first delivery planned for the end of 2017.

Also under advanced stage of development is the second version of the all-new A350 XWB, the A350-1000, which is set for first flight before year end and first delivery in the second half of 2017. Together, the members of the A350 XWB Family are redefining long haul travel in the larger twin aisle market, consuming 25 per cent less fuel and bringing new levels of passenger comfort, with more personal space in all classes.

The current Airbus product line comprises a total of 16 models spread across four aircraft Families – the A320, A330, A350 XWB and A380.

Till today Airbus has recorded over 16,700 orders for its various models and its aircraft are flying with more than 400 airlines worldwide. The company’s backlog of 6,700 aircraft on order for future delivery is the highest ever recorded by any aircraft manufacturer and represents some 10 years of full production at current rates.

Airbus: Growing Markets in Latin America

Airlines of the region flying some of the world’s youngest fleets

Santiago, Chile, March 29, 2016: Airbus’ presence at this week’s FIDAE 2016 air show in Chile underscores the company’s presence in Latin America and the Caribbean, with more than 600 jetliners in operation and market share of 65 per cent based on the to-be-delivered aircraft backlog.

Rafael Alonso, the Airbus head in Latin American and the Caribbean, said the region’s carriers are setting global standards by flying some of the world’s youngest fleets, driven by a highly competitive market. The in-service fleet average age is just over nine years old, as illustrated by the service entry last January of Airbus’ new A350 XWB with TAM Airlines of the LATAM Airlines Group, and the upcoming introduction of A320neo (new engine option) Family aircraft in Brazil and Mexico.

Brazil represents more than one third of Latin America’s air traffic overall, a figure that has more than doubled since 2000, according to Alonso. Appropriately, this country is the largest market for Airbus in Latin America, with its aircraft flown by the LATAM Airlines Group, Azul Linhas Aereas and Avianca Brasil.

Alonso anticipates tremendous growth in Mexico, where Airbus has four prominent customers: Volaris, Interjet and VivaAerobus (all of which are low-cost carriers); and cargo operator Aerounion.

Looking to the future, Alonso foresees additional opportunities as airlines build on the consolidation and alliances that were forged in previous years, and as the region continues to benefit from traffic growth – noting that nine of the world’s 91 aviation mega-cities will be situated in Latin America by 2034.

Climate Disclosure Leadership Index

Finnair Identified as a Nordic Leader in Climate Change Related Information

Helsinki, November 4, 2015: Finnair has been identified as a Nordic leader for the quality of climate change related information that it has disclosed to investors and the global marketplace through CDP (formerly Carbon Disclosure Project), the international not-for-profit that drives sustainable economies.

Finnair is therefore awarded a position on the Nordic Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI), which comprises of organisations that have scored within the top 10% in the region. Finnair’s score was 99 out of 100. The score was achieved by disclosing high quality carbon emissions and energy data through CDP’s climate change program.  The reported data has been independently assessed against CDP’s scoring methodology.

“This recognition from CDP validates our efforts and ability to measure and disclose information related to climate change”, says Pekka Vauramo, Finnair CEO. “Aviation is an energy-intensive industry, and it is important to understand the impact Finnair as an airline has on climate change, to be able to take well-planned steps towards more sustainable aviation.”

Finnair is also committed to the common goal of the aviation industry to stabilise net aviation CO2 emissions at 2020 levels through carbon-neutral growth. Aviation is also pushing for a global economic mechanism for dealing with the emissions that can’t be reduced immediately. This must be done at a global level through the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
