Indigo Partners Commit for 430 Airbus A320neo Family Aircraft

Valued at $49.5 billion, this is Airbus’ largest single announcement ever

Dubai, 15 November 2017: Indigo Partners’ four portfolio airlines have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the purchase by the four airlines of 430 additional AirbusA320neo Family aircraft. The aircraft will be allocated among the ultra low-cost airlines Frontier Airlines (United States), JetSMART (Chile), Volaris (Mexico) and Wizz Air (Hungary) upon the completion of final purchase agreements between Airbus and the four airlines. that Engine selections will be made and announced at a later date.

Indigo Partners LLC, based in Phoenix, Arizona, is a private equity fund focused on worldwide investments in air transportation.

The A320neo Family incorporates the very latest technologies, including new generation engines and Sharklet wing-tip devices, which together will deliver 20 percent fuel savings by 2020.

The 430-aircraft commitment, comprised of 273 A320neos and 157 A321neos worth $49.5 billion at list prices, was announced at the Dubai Airshow by Bill Franke, Managing Partner of Indigo Partners, and John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer Customers, Airbus Commercial Aircraft. When added to existing Airbus A320 Family orders, the new agreement will make Indigo Partners one of the largest customers by order number in the world for the Airbus single-aisle aircraft family. Airlines in the Indigo Partners family previously have placed orders for 427 A320 Family aircraft.

Also present at the announcement were Enrique Beltranena, CEO of Volaris; Barry Biffle, CEO of Frontier Airlines; Estuardo Ortiz, CEO of JetSMART; and József Váradi, CEO of Wizz Air. They confirmed their firm’s individual aircraft orders as follows:

  • Wizz Air:        72 A320neo, 74 A321neo
  • Frontier:        100 A320neo, 34 A321neo
  • JetSMART:    56 A320neo, 14 A321neo
  • Volaris:          46 A320neo, 34 A321neo

With more than 5,200 orders received from 95 customers since its launch in 2010, the A320neo Family has captured nearly 60 percent market share.

Toulouse,  March 1, 2017:  Following a comprehensive flight test program, the Airbus A321neo powered by CFM International’s LEAP-1A engines has been granted joint Type Certification from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The EASA Type Certificate was signed by EASA’s Certification Director Trevor Woods and Michael J. Kaszycki FAA’s acting Manager Transport Airplane Directorate – Aircraft Certification Service. Both certificates were handed over to Airbus  Senior Vice President  A320 Family Program, Klaus Roewe and Airbus A320 Family Program Chief Engineer, Pierre-Henri Brousse.

The A321neo powered by CFM engines, successfully completed a certification program accumulating over 400 flight hours in more than 160 flights. The tests validated the aircraft airframe and systems well beyond their design limits to meet all airworthiness criteria. The A321neo with CFM engines is the fourth member of the NEO Family certified over the last 15 months, giving customers of the A320neo Family the option of two engine types; Pratt & Whitney’s Pure Power PW1100G-JM and CFM’s LEAP-1A.

Toulouse, February 16, 2017: Air India has become the latest A320neo operator after taking delivery of the first of 14 aircraft leased from Kuwait headquartered ALAFCO Aviation Lease And Finance Company, becoming the first CFM powered NEO operator in India. The delivery is also the first NEO for ALAFCO from an order for 85 A320neo Family. The A320neo will join Air India’s existing fleet of 66 A320 Family aircraft.

Through a network of over 45 Indian suppliers, more than 6,000 professionals in India contribute directly and indirectly to all Airbus programs and every aircraft produced today is partly made in India. The A320neo Family incorporates latest technologies including new generation engines and wing tip devices, which together deliver more than 15 percent in fuel savings from day one and 20 percent by 2020.

The A320neo Family is the world’s best-selling single aisle product line with over 5,000 orders from 92 customers since its launch in 2010 capturing almost 60 percent share of the market. Thanks to their widest cabin, all members of the A320neo Family offer unmatched comfort in all classes and Airbus’ 18” wide seats in economy as standard. To date over 70 A320neo have been delivered to 18 customers.

Lufthansa Welcomes its Fifth Airbus A320neo

Convincing results in fuel efficiency and noise emissions

Hamburg, December 29, 2016:  Lufthansa took delivery of another AirbusA320neo from Airbus. This means that, five aircraft of this model have been delivered to Lufthansa this year, as planned. The Transfer of Title of the new aircraft – with the registration D-AINE – took place at Airbus  in Hamburg-Finkenwerder. Transfer of the aircraft to the ‘home base’ in Frankfurt is scheduled for  January 2, 2017. An additional ten A320neo aircraft are to be delivered to Lufthansa in 2017.

Lufthansa is the first customer for this new generation Airbus A320neo. These new aircraft have been in service since the beginning of 2016 on routes within Germany as well as on inner-European routes. Through new technology engine design and the latest cabin layout with up to 180 seats, the A320neo is, in fact, around 20 percent cheaper to run per passenger. Another important feature of the A320neo is the significant reduction in both noise and CO2 emissions. The 85 decibel ‘noise footprint’ of an A320neo at take-off is only half as large as of an A320 in the existing fleet, making an important contribution towards active noise reduction. The Lufthansa Group has a total of 116 neo-type aircraft on order, 45 of them in the larger A321neo model.

Airbus Shortlists 50 Teams for Fifth Fly Your Ideas Global Competition 

Unprecedented participation from students worldwide to innovate the way we fly 

Toulouse, December 20. 2016: A record 5,499 students from around the world registered to participate in the fifth edition of Airbus’ Fly Your Ideas, the global student challenge organized in partnership with UNESCO.

A group of 60 Airbus experts and innovators assessed the ideas submitted by 356 teams from 89 countries. The rigorous evaluation process took place at four different Airbus locations in France, Germany, Spain and the UK, with 50 student teams selected to reach Round Two of the competition, starting in January 2017.

The competition is led by teams registered in the Asia-Pacific region. The 50 teams comprise 202 students representing 38 different nationalities. With 52% of teams mixing male and female students, two thirds of all teams are diverse in some way, for example with members coming from different countries or studying different subjects. This reflects Airbus’ commitment to diversity which it sees as an essential driver for innovation and success.

Innovative ideas from the 50 chosen teams include robotic luggage trolleys, passenger seats which can be boarded outside the aircraft, new solutions for energy harvesting and virtual reality applications.

 “Fly Your Ideas is unique and we are proud of the company-wide engagement of Airbus employees who support the competition, either as assessors, mentors or experts”, says Charles Champion, Airbus Executive Vice President Engineering. “We are offering students the rare opportunity to interact directly with senior specialists from across the business. In turn, these experts will benefit from their direct interaction with talents from across the globe, all sharing the same passion for one of the world’s most exciting industries.”

Each of the teams has 100 days to refine and develop their ideas. The top five teams to make it through to Round Three will spend a week at the “ProtoSpace” based at the Airbus HQ in Toulouse to prototype, test and visualize their ideas using state-of-the art equipment with personalized guidance from Airbus. The winning team will receive a €30,000 prize, the runner up team €15,000, at a live prize giving event in May 2017.

EASA and FAA certification paves way for the first delivery 

Toulouse, December 15, 2016: Following a comprehensive flight test program, the A321neo powered by Pratt & Whitney’s PurePower PW1100G-JM engines received joint Type Certification from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on 15th December 2016.
The documents were respectively signed by EASA’s Certification Director Trevor Woods and by Jeffrey Duven, FAA Manager of the Transport Airplane Directorate – Aircraft Certification Service. Both certificates were handed over to Airbus Executive Vice President Programs, Didier Evrard, and Airbus Senior Vice President A320 Family Program, Klaus Roewe.

The A321neo – the largest member of the A320neo Family – successfully completed a certification program accumulating over 350 flight hours in more than 130 flights; validating its airframe and systems well beyond their design limits to ensure the aircraft successfully meets all airworthiness criteria. The campaign also confirmed the aircraft is meeting its performance targets in terms of fuel burn and range. Offering significant environmental benefits, including a smaller noise footprint, the aircraft also demonstrated excellent low speed performance capabilities for its operators.

SAS Becomes First Scandinavian Operator of the A320neo

October 26, 2016: SAS has taken delivery of its first of 30 A320neo aircraft ordered, becoming the first Airline in Scandinavia to operate the world’s most fuel efficient single aisle aircraft. SAS ordered the A320neo as part of its strategy to modernize its fleet with more fuel-efficient aircraft, reducing environmental impact such as emissions and aircraft noise. The A320neo will join SAS’s existing Airbus fleet of 25 A320 Family aircraft, eight A330s and eight A340s.

SAS’s A320neo is configured in a comfortable single class layout with 174 seats. The aircraft is powered by CFM International LEAP-1A engines and will be deployed on short to medium-haul routes from its Scandinavian home bases to destinations throughout Europe.

Airbus Helicopters: One Year ‘Open Innovation’

Already 35 applications received from SMEs and partners

Marignane, France, June 9, 2016: In its first year, Airbus Helicopters’ ‘Open Innovation’ program received already 35 innovative applications. These ranged from a new heat-transfer method to nanoparticle-based technology. The process favors proposals that show signs of advanced development. “The best situation is to see technology which has already been applied in a domain other than helicopters, such as from the aeronautical industry,” said Jacques Le Sauce, research program manager at Airbus Helicopters. “The lowest level of maturity we consider is to have a prototype or a real scale demonstrator. That allows us to imagine if we can integrate this technology in our products.”
In 2015, Airbus Helicopters launched the Open Innovation initiative, aimed at putting companies with innovative ideas in touch with interested parties at Airbus Helicopters. The initiative, which functions like a “match.com” service for technology, led to four new support contracts for technology applications. This month, a new website will streamline the process, making it easier for innovation to step through the doors of Airbus Helicopters.
The program’s concise application process has seen a healthy amount of success. Before Open Innovation, Le Sauce noted that suppliers and partners were often unclear of whom to contact to discuss new proposals. “The idea of Open Innovation was to make sure each proposal would be reviewed, and when possible, to organize a meeting with experts,” said Le Sauce. “It was a way to respond to the needs of suppliers.”

And suppliers responded in kind, submitting proposals which demonstrate the wealth of creative thinking on tap in the industry. Last year, nine meetings were held with applicants. “This is a collaborative process,” said Le Sauce. “That’s the first thing to remember in looking for new technology, because it’s the technology holders who propose solutions and we who evaluate them.” The expert meetings put representatives from different parts of Airbus Helicopters in a room with the external SME, promoting constructive exchange for both parties. “That opens the door for discussions among experts who aren’t from the same background,” Le Sauce said.

Collaboration of this kind contributes to putting Airbus Helicopters at the forefront of innovation. “I think we are one of the first in our industry to propose something so simple to use,” said Le Sauce. “And clearly open to innovative companies.”

Munich, April 7, 2016 – Airbus Group (stock exchange symbol: AIR) and Siemens
(stock exchange symbol: SIE) have signed a collaboration agreement in the field of
hybrid electric propulsion. In doing so, the Chief Executive Officers (CEO) of both
companies, Tom Enders and Joe Kaeser, have launched a major joint project
towards the electrification of aviation with the goal of demonstrating the technical
feasibility of various hybrid/electric propulsion systems by 2020. Both companies will
be making significant contributions into the project and have sourced a team of
around 200 employees to advance European leadership in innovation and the
development of electrically powered aircraft.
“Electric and electric-hybrid flight represent some of the biggest industrial challenges
of our time, aiming at zero-emissions aviation. The progress we have achieved in
this arena, together with our industrial and governmental partners, in only a few
years is breath-taking, culminating in last year’s channel crossing of our all-electric
E-Fan aircraft. Big thanks today particularly to the Bavarian Government and
Minister Aigner for their support here in Ottobrunn”, said Tom Enders, CEO of
Airbus Group. “We believe that by 2030 passenger aircraft below 100 seats could be
propelled by hybrid propulsion systems and we are determined to explore this

Hybrid-electric propulsion systems can significantly reduce fuel consumption of
aircraft and reduce noise. European emissions targets aim for a 75 percent
reduction of CO2 emissions by 2050 compared to the values for the year 2000.
These ambitious goals cannot be achieved by conventional technologies.
Airbus Group and Siemens plan to jointly develop prototypes for various propulsion
systems with power classes ranging from a few 100 kilowatts up to 10 and more
megawatts, i.e. for short, local trips with aircraft below 100 seats, helicopters or
UAVs up to classic short and medium-range journeys.
Both companies together with Austria’s Diamond Aircraft initially presented a hybrid
aircraft back in 2011. Since then, Siemens has been developing an electric engine
for aircraft which supplies five times as much power while retaining the same weight.
Airbus Group has been gathering operational experience with electrically powered
aircraft since 2014 with the E-Fan, a full electric two-seater dedicated to training
pilots. This success has been achieved together with various industrial partners and
steadfast support of the French government.
Airbus Group intends to accelerate with the extended capabilities of the planned
E-Aircraft System House at Ottobrunn/Taufkirchen site the development of
components and system technologies.
Siemens is determined to establish hybrid-electric propulsion systems for aircraft as
a future business. The partners have agreed to collaborate exclusively in selected
development areas. In parallel, both partners will continue to work together with their
current partners for small aircraft with fewer than 20 seats.

First Airbus aircraft produced in the U.S. takes flight

Mobile, Alabama, March 21, 2016: The first Airbus aircraft produced in the U.S. Manufacturing Facility has flown for the first time. The A321, destined for JetBlue took off from the Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley in Mobile, Alabama, at 9:36 a.m., performed its test sequences, and landed safely at 1:02 p.m. The flight lasted 3 hours and 26 minutes during which tests were performed on systems, engines and structure performance. Following the maiden flight, the aircraft will go through a few more weeks in final production before being delivered to JetBlue.

The aircraft was flown by Test Pilots Mark McCullins and Bruce Macdonald. They were accompanied on the flight by Flight Test Engineers Thierry Cros and Nick Picconi, and Ground Test Engineers/Cabin Specialists Alexander Gentzsch and Mike Johns.

More than 300 employees who work at the facility cheered as the plane took-off. “We’ve come to an exciting milestone in the production of any aircraft, but this one is particularly special,” said Daryl Taylor, Vice President and General Manager of the Airbus U.S. Manufacturing Facility. “The Mobile team has worked hard, and I’m proud that their skill and talent have brought us to this moment. Together we are fulfilling the promise we made to the city of Mobile, the state of Alabama, and the Gulf Coast region—we’re creating a new center of commercial aircraft production in the U.S. This is just the first of many aircraft to come.”

The A321 is the largest member of the A320 Family offering passengers state-of-the-art cabin design, wider seats and superior comfort whilst airlines benefit from the unique operational flexibility of Airbus’ single-aisle aircraft. With a range of up to 7,400km / 4,000nm, the A321 is able to fly longer routes as for example Europe to U.S. The A320 Family is the world’s best- selling single aisle product line with over 12,400 orders and close to 6,700 aircraft delivered to some 300 customers worldwide.
