Boeing 737 MAX 9 Awarded FAA Certification

First deliveries of the newest member of the 737 MAX family to start in the coming weeks

Seattle, February 16, 2018: Boeing announced that the 737 MAX 9 has received an amended type certificate (ATC) from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), officially certifying the airplane for commercial service. This certification marks the culmination of a successful flight test program that began in March 2017with two Boeing flight test airplanes. Boeing is now in the final stages of preparing the MAX 9 for its first delivery to launch customer Lion Air Group.

The 737 MAX 9 is designed for a capacity of up to 220 passengers and a maximum range of 3,550 nautical miles. With three additional seat rows compared to the 737 MAX 8, this airplane provides operators added capacity while maximizing profitability within their network.

The 737 MAX family is designed to offer customers exceptional performance, with lower per-seat costs and an extended range that is opening up new destinations in the single-aisle market. The 737 MAX incorporates the latest CFM International LEAP-1B engines, Advanced Technology winglets, Boeing Sky Interior, large flight deck displays and other features to deliver the highest efficiency, reliability and passenger comfort in the single-aisle market.

Improved aerodynamics and efficient jet engines open new horizons for airlines and passengers

Paris, February 14, 2018: Airbus’ latest long range airliner, the A321LR, marked a new milestone with a Paris-to-New York nonstop flight. The aircraft is powered by two CFM International LEAP-1A engines. The intercontinental flight is part of nearly 100 hours of flight tests in advance of the jetliner’s airworthiness certification, expected in the second quarter of 2018.
The LR designation is for ‘long range’ and with good reason: the A321LR has the longest range of any single-aisle commercial aircraft today, able to fly 7,400 kilometers nonstop.
Its ‘long legs’ are signified by the No. 1 A321LR’s livery featuring the Eiffel Tower and Statue of Liberty – a representation of the Paris/New York route flown yesterday from Le Bourget Airport near the French capital to the New York region’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. The aircraft also is well suited for intra-regional airline segments in Asia, the United States and other markets.
The A321LR’s unrivalled efficiency – driven by aerodynamic improvements and state-of-the-art fuel-efficient turbofan jet engines – has established its popularity among airlines, with Airbus already notching more than 100 orders for the aircraft; the first customer delivery is expected in late 2018. The interior of the A321LR will be passenger-pleasing as well, with unmatched comfort from the widest single-aisle cabin in the sky, comfortable seats, extra-large luggage bins and the latest in-flight-entertainment technology.
Operators can outfit the A321LR in state-of-the-art two-class configurations with full-flat seats for true long-haul comfort, or in a single-class layout capable of accommodating up to 240 passengers.
The A321LR is the next evolutionary step of Airbus’ twin-engine A321neo that has captured more than an 80 percent share in its middle-of-the-market category. Airbus expects the A321LR to continue this trend, as it offers a thoroughly modern replacement for the large number of ageing narrowbody and widebody aircraft facing retirement in the coming years.

Boeing 737 MAX 10 Reaches Firm Configuration

Airplane on track for deliveries starting in 2020 timeframe

Singapore, Feb. 6, 2018: Boeing’s 737 MAX 10 has reached a major milestone as the MAX program completed firm configuration on the airplane. This means engineers now have all the design requirements in place for what will be the largest member of Boeing’s single-aisle family. Boeing announced the achievement today at the Singapore Airshow.
“The steps we’ve taken to reach this point ensure the MAX 10 will be the most efficient and profitable single-aisle airplane the market has ever seen,” said Randy Tinseth, vice president of Marketing, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “We’re working closely with our airline customers to deliver on the performance and efficiency benefits we’ve promised.”
The 737 MAX 10, which will use a stretched fuselage that is 66 inches longer than the 737 MAX 9, now moves into the detailed design phase prior to the start of production. The airplane will carry up to 230 passengers, delivering 5 percent lower trip costs and 5 percent lower seat-mile costs compared to its competition.
The MAX 10 is coming off a strong launch at the 2017 Paris Air Show. The airplane now has more than 416 orders and commitments from 18 customers across the globe. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in the 2020 timeframe.
The MAX 10 will soon join the rest of the 737 MAX family. The first MAX 7 rolled out of the paint hangar earlier this week and will soon start flight tests. The MAX 8 has been in service since 2017, already carrying more than 1.8 million passengers. And the first MAX 9 is scheduled to be delivered in the coming weeks.

Airbus’ newest single aisle offering transatlantic flight capability

Hamburg, Finkenwerder, January 31, 2018: Airbus’ first A321LR (Long Range) has accomplished its maiden flight following a mission lasting 2 hours and 36 minutes. The aircraft powered by CFM International LEAP-1A engines is now set to undergo a nearly 100 hour flight test program, including transatlantic missions, for EASA and FAA Type Certification in the second quarter this year. Entry into service is targeted for the fourth quarter 2018.

The aircraft’s crew comprised: Experimental Test Pilots Yann Beaufils and Peter Lofts as well as Flight Test Engineers Frank Hohmeister, Jim Fawcett, Cedric Favrichon and Cabin Specialist Alexander Gentzsch. During the flight, the crew tested the aircraft’s flight controls, engines and main systems including flight envelope protections, both at high and low speed.

Klaus Roewe, Head of A320 Program stated: “Thanks to its outstanding performance and unbeatable efficiency, the A321LR will allow our customers to perform flights of up to 4,000nm (7,400 km), allowing them to open new routes – for example transatlantic – and conquer new markets.”

The A321LR features a new door configuration, enabling its operators to accommodate up to 240 passengers in Airbus’ widest Single Aisle fuselage in the sky. The new ‘Airspace by Airbus cabin’ available on the A320 Family additionally enhances the passengers’ unrivalled travel experience. With further options, combining an increased Maximum Take Off Weight (MTOW) of 97 tons and a third Additional Centre Fuel Tank (ACT), the aircraft’s range is allowing airlines to tap into new market opportunities.

Incorporating the latest engines, aerodynamic advances, and cabin innovations, the A321neo offers a significant reduction in fuel consumption of 20 percent by 2020. With more than 1900 orders received from over 50 customers, to date the A321neo has captured a solid 80 percent market share, making it the true aircraft of choice in the Middle of the Market.

CFM56 Fleet Surpasses 500 Million Flight Cycles

Nearly 1,900 engines still to be delivered

West Chester, Ohio, October 31, 2017:  CFM International’s ubiquitous CFM56 engine fleet has surpassed 500 million flight cycles while logging nearly 900 million flight hours since the first aircraft, a DC-8-71, entered commercial service in April 1982. CFM56 engines are a product of CFM International, a 50/50 joint company between GE and Safran Aircraft Engines and the world’s leading supplier of commercial aircraft engines. 
There are currently more than 24,000 CFM56 engines in commercial and military service with 560 operators around the globe. Overall, CFM has delivered more than 31,000 engines to date and the current production engines continue to lead the industry with world-class reliability and low cost of ownership.  The CFM56-5B has logged more than 100 million flight cycles and 180 million flight hours powering the Airbus A320ceo family since 1996, while the CFM56-7B engine surpassed 170 million cycles and 300 million hours since 1998.
“This is a remarkable achievement,” said. Gaël Méheust, president and CEO of CFM International.  “Although our founding fathers were confident the program would be a success, I don’t think even they could have dreamed of what we would eventually accomplish with this product.”

Aircraft offers substantial fuel efficiency

Paris/Le Bourget, June 19, 2017: Boeing and TUI Group, the world’s number one tourism business, today announced its selection of 18 new 737 MAX 10s at the 2017 Paris Air Show. TUI Group already had 70 unfilled orders for the 737 MAX and will convert 18 of these existing orders to the 737 MAX 10. The leisure group is the first European operator to select the latest member of the 737 MAX family of airplanes.

“Being the first to fly the new larger 737 MAX 10 in Europe means we’ll be able to take more customers on holiday in the most advanced, most comfortable and most fuel efficient aircraft,” said David Burling, Member of the Executive Board and responsible for TUI Group Airlines.  “The continued modernization of our fleet and the delivery of the new 737 MAX, now including the 737 MAX 10, will support the delivery of TUI’s commitment to reducing the carbon intensity (CO2) of our operations.”

Airbus Delivers First Ever A321neo to Virgin America

CFM engines boost fuel efficiency by at least 15%

Hamburg, Germany, April 20, 2017: Airbus has delivered the first-ever A321neo. The latest generation aircraft powered by CFM International’s LEAP-1A engines was handed over to U.S. airline Virgin America, an all-Airbus operator, at a ceremony in Hamburg, Germany.

“After Virgin America having been the first customer signing for the A320neo back in December 2010, we are today delighted to deliver the first A321neo to them,” said Fabrice Brégier, Airbus Chief Operating Officer and President Commercial Aircraft. “With our largest, latest, most fuel efficient NEO Single Aisle aircraft we are turning a new page. The new A321neo powered by next generation CFM LEAP-1A engines guarantees new levels of efficiency and longer range to its operators, greater comfort to the flying public and less emissions and noise to the airport communities. Thanks to its cutting edge technologies it is today the most eco-sensitive Single Aisle aircraft available.”

The A320neo significantly reduces noise levels, generating only half the noise footprint compared to previous generation aircraft. Equipped with fuel-saving Sharklet wingtip devices nitrous oxide (NOX) emissions are 50 percent below regulatory requirements as outlined by the Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP). In addition, the aircraft with LEAP-1A engines is proven to deliver at least a 15% fuel savings compared to Virgin America’s current generation aircraft, which is equivalent to cutting 5,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions with each plane every year.

“We have been with Virgin America from the beginning and we are excited to launch this new chapter in that relationship,” said Gael Meheust, President and CEO of CFM International. “The LEAP-1A has done extremely well in its first months of commercial service. It is proving unprecedented levels of fuel efficiency and environmental responsibility while maintaining the level of reliability Virgin America has come to expect from CFM. The A321neo is the largest member of the A320neo Family. It covers the entire market, from high density to long-range thin routes. There are currently over 1,300 units on order.

The new A321neo will become the largest aircraft in Virgin America’s fleet, featuring 185 seats – a 24 percent higher capacity at same comfort levels than its current A320s. The aircraft is expected to enter service on May 31, 2017 with its inaugural flight from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA). Virgin America currently operates a fleet of 63 Airbus A320 family aircraft comprised of A319ceo and A320ceo aircraft powered by CFM’s CFM56-5B engines.

As first announced in April 2016, Virgin America was acquired by Alaska Air Group in December 2016.

Seattle, April 13, 2017: The Boeing 737 MAX 9 completed its first flight today in the skies above Puget Sound. The 737 MAX program achieved the milestone on schedule, beginning a comprehensive flight-test program. “The MAX 9’s first flight is another milestone that continues the program’s strong track record of progress,” said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President & CEO Kevin McAllister.
The airplane completed a successful 2 hour, 42-minute flight, taking off from Renton Field in Renton, Wash., at 10:52 a.m. local time and landing at 1:34 p.m. at Seattle’s Boeing Field. Piloted by Boeing Test & Evaluation Capts. Christine Walsh and Ed Wilson, the airplane performed tests on flight controls, systems and handling qualities. The MAX 9 will now undergo comprehensive flight testing before customer deliveries begin in 2018.

Smallest member of the A320neo Family powered by CFM LEAP-1A engines

Hamburg, March 31, 2017: The first Airbus A319neo performed its maiden flight today. The smallest member of the A320neo Family, powered by CFMInternational LEAP-1A engines took off from Hamburg and landed in Toulouse after a 5 hour flight.

It was piloted by Experimental test pilots Michel Gagneux and Eckard Hausser. They were assisted in the cockpit by Test-Flight Engineer Jean Michel Pin, while two flight test engineers Sylvie Loisel-Labaste and David O’nions directed the flight from the aircraft’s Test Engineer station.

This flight was the occasion for the crew to assess the general handling of the aircraft and to check the main systems. The A319neo, registered as D-AVWA, will be based in Toulouse in order to complete its flight test program.

The A320neo Family is the world’s best-selling single aisle product line with over 5,000 orders received from over 90 customers, capturing almost 60 percent share of the market. The A320neo Family incorporates latest technologies including new generation engines and Sharklet wing tip devices, which together deliver more than 15 percent in fuel savings from day one and 20 percent by 2020. For the environment, the A320neo’s fuel savings translate into some 5,000 tons fewer CO2 emitted per aircraft annually. Additionally, the A320neo Family provides a double-digit reduction in NOx emissions and reduced engine noise.

With one aircraft in three sizes (A319neo, A320neo & A321neo), the A320neo Family, seating from 100 to 240 passengers, seamlessly covers the entire single-aisle segment from low to high-density domestic to longer range routes.

The A319neo is the smallest member of the A320neo Family; it offers its operators superior short field performance in hot and high conditions. It can accommodate up to 160 passengers without compromise on the comfort.

Boeing Celebrates Rollout of First 737 MAX 9

Renton, Wash., March 7, 2017: Boeing marked a milestone today as the first 737 MAX 9 made its debut in front of thousands of Boeing employees.

The 737 MAX 9 is the second member of Boeing’s 737 MAX family, with a maximum capacity of 220 passengers and a range of 3,515 nautical miles due to its highly fuel efficient CFM LEAP-1B engines and advanced fuel saving winglets. The 737 Max family has a noise footprint which is about 40% smaller than today’s typical single-aisle airplanes.

The airplane now begins system checks, fueling and engine runs on the flight line. Once completed, the airplane will begin flight testing in the coming weeks.

“Our primary focus is delivering an aircraft that has the legendary reliability our 737 customers depend on, plus the optimized flexibility and range capability they desire,” said Keith Leverkuhn, vice president and general manager of the 737 MAX program, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. The 737 MAX 9 offers 16 more seats than 737 Max 8 helping airlines to minimize the risk of growth.

The 737 MAX 9 is scheduled to enter service in 2018. The 737 MAX 8 is on track to deliver to customers in the second quarter of 2017.
