Sustainable Aviation Technology Center to pursue mutually beneficial research 

Zhuhai, China, November 1, 2016: Boeing and Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China (COMAC) today signed a new agreement to expand their joint research collaboration in support of the long-term sustainable growth of commercial aviation.

The two companies, which signed an initial collaboration agreement in March 2012, have been researching ways to improve aviation’s fuel efficiency and greenhouse-gas emissions reduction, including sustainable aviation biofuel and air traffic management (ATM) efficiency.

Through this new agreement, signed at the Zhuhai Airshow, the companies will explore six areas of mutually beneficial research through the renamed Boeing-COMAC Sustainable Aviation Technology Center. They will also continue to exchange commercial aviation market forecasts.

“As we approach the 45th year of collaboration between Boeing and China’s aviation industry, Boeing and COMAC are expanding our efforts to ensure commercial aviation’s long-term sustainable growth, improve its efficiency and reduce environmental impact,” said Ian Chang, vice president, Supplier Management China Operations & Business Development, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “Our mutually beneficial research with COMAC supports Boeing’s global effort to enable growth and partner to address challenges for our industry.”

“The two companies have enhanced mutual trust and understanding during five years of working together,” said Wu Guanghui, Vice President of COMAC. “The agreement signed today extends and will bring our cooperation to a new level, enabling the two companies to leverage their own advantages for win-win results that can benefit not only China, but also the rest of world.”

Research areas for the Sustainable Aviation Technology Center will include:

  • Technologies supporting sustainable aviation fuel development and assessing the benefit to aviation of using these technologies;
  • ATM technologies and applications;
  • Environmentally sustainable manufacturing, including enhanced recycling of materials;
  • Technologies to enhance the airplane cabin environment related to environmental stewardship and air travel by aging populations;
  • New industry or international standards in aviation energy conservation and emissions reduction;
  • Improvements in workplace safety during cabin and ground operations.

Initial agreement

As they have since 2012, Boeing and COMAC will jointly select and fund research by China-based universities and research institutions. Their initial agreement created the Boeing-COMAC Aviation Energy Conservation and Emissions Reductions (AECER) Technology Center. Since then, the Boeing-COMAC AECER Center conducted 17 research projects, leading to an aviation biofuel demonstration facility that turns waste “gutter oil” into jet fuel and three ATM software prototype systems. The Center has attracted participation of 12 domestic and international research partners.

In addition, Boeing and COMAC plan to open a joint venture facility in Zhoushan, China, that will install interiors and paint 737s before Boeing delivers these airplanes to Chinese customers.

China is one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets. The Civil Aviation Administration of China has forecast that passenger traffic in China will reach 485 million this year and will reach 1.5 billion passengers in 2030. Boeing has estimated that Chinese airlines will need to purchase more than 6,800 new airplanes through 2035 to meet fast-growing demand for domestic and international air travel.

Gatwick’s world-first waste plant has been shortlisted for a prestigious Sustainability Leaders Award the airport announced today – as Gatwick becomes one of first signatories to the international Airports Sustainability Declaration.

The awards are run by Edie – leading providers of environmental news and commentary – and Gatwick has been shortlisted after becoming the first airport in the World able to dispose of Category 1 waste on site and convert it into energy – an issue that costs the global aviation sector around £500 million a year.

Category 1 forms the majority of waste from non-EU flights and is defined as food waste or anything mixed with it – such as packaging, cups, meal trays – from international transport vehicles.

Its disposal is governed by strict rules that – until now – require specialist processing offsite to protect against the potential spread of disease and infectious material.

From November however Gatwick’s new £3.8million processing plant – delivered in partnership with DHL – will not only dispose of this waste safely on site, it will also convert it – and all other organic waste – into energy to power the new plant and heat the North Terminal.

New waste plant

Gatwick currently treats 2,200 tonnes of Category 1 waste each year – around 20% of the total generated at the airport (10,500 tonnes) – and the new energy plant will process around 10 tonnes a day.

The plant also includes a waste sorting centre as Gatwick brings responsibility for sorting in-house to maximise the amount recycled – a move that will boost the airport’s recycling rate to around 85% by 2020 – higher than any UK airport currently and up from 49% today.

The Airports Sustainability Declaration was signed by Gatwick yesterday at the Airports Going Green Conference at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport.  The declaration has been designed to strengthen worldwide collaboration between airports to improve the sharing of environmental innovation, knowledge and best practice.

“Being short listed is recognition of the work we have put in to get to this stage, but we will not stop here.  

“We are already looking at making this waste plant bigger to cope with the growth in our passenger numbers in coming years.  We are also exploring how our construction waste can be reused and recycled as much as possible to help us reduce the amount of carbon we use.”

Neste Reaching the Climate ‘A List’ of CDP

Recognized as world leader for corporate action on climate change

Keilaranta, Finland, October 25, 2016: For the first time, Neste has reached the Carbon Disclosure Project’s (CDP) highest Climate A List. This recognition is due to Neste’s work in combating climate change. Of the thousands of companies involved in the climate change program, only 193 made it onto the list. Only five of all companies awarded a position on the ‘A List’ represent the energy sector, which highlights Neste’s exceptional role and actions within its industry on climate change. Of the energy sector players, Neste is the only company from the Nordics included in the A-list.

The ‘A List’ recognizes companies that were considered to have most effectively tackled climate change, and adapted to it. Companies had to achieve over 75 percent of the total score in all the areas evaluated, including “Leadership”. The reporting of ‘A List’ companies on climate emissions also had to be public and sufficiently comprehensive, as well as for the most part certified by an independent third party, in accordance with an approved certification standard.

Building a low-carbon society

The Carbon Disclosure Project is an international non-profit organization that supports sustainable economic development. Thousands of companies take part in CDP’s annual Climate evaluation. Neste is among the nine percent selected on CDP’s Climate A List. Based on the previous year’s emission reporting, the list includes 14 Nordic companies. ICAO Achieves Consensus on Sustainable Future for Global Civil Aviation

Air transport is the world’s first major industry sector to adopt a global approach to international emissions reduction

Montréal, October 6, 2016: ICAO’s Member States concluded the UN aviation agency’s landmark 39th Assembly today, delivering an historic agreement on a new global market-based measure (GMBM) to offset CO2 emissions from international flights and a comprehensive roadmap for the sustainable future of international aviation.

“Aviation can now claim its ‘Paris moment’,” declared ICAO Council President Dr. Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu, “Air transport is not only the world’s first major industry sector to adopt a global approach to international emissions reduction, but very importantly States representing more than 83% of international flight operations have volunteered to participate in the GMBM from its earliest stages in 2021.”

“The GMBM will serve as an important new tool to complement the wide-ranging emissions reduction progress already being achieved under aviation’s basket of measures,” noted ICAO Secretary General Dr. Fang Liu in her Assembly closing remarks, “namely through technological innovation, modernized procedures, and the ever-expanding use of sustainable alternative fuels.”

Significant and far-reaching 39th Assembly progress was achieved across all of ICAO’s five Strategic Objectives for Aviation Safety, Air Navigation Capacity and Efficiency, Aviation Security and Facilitation, the Economic Development of Air Transport, and Environmental Protection.

Targets and approaches

ICAO Member States delivered very clear endorsements for the targets and approaches being pursued globally under ICAO’s comprehensive strategic plans, and supported the need for it to provide similar leadership at the global level in the form of two new Global Plans now to be developed for Aviation Security and Air Transport Economic Development.

They also showed their clear appreciation and support for ICAO’s recent reprioritization on assistance and capacity-building under its No Country Left Behind strategy, aided by more intensive global partnerships and resource mobilization.

Other decisions of note included agreement to amend the Chicago Convention to increase the number of States on ICAO’s Governing Council and its supporting Air Navigation Commission.

“The Council President and I have been very encouraged to see such a high level of interest from Member States and industry in the work of ICAO, recognizing and supporting our leading role in global aviation,” Dr. Liu concluded. “This Assembly has benefitted from the participation of more than 2,200 delegates from 185 Members States, non-Member States and 56 observer delegations – the highest number we have ever hosted – and we have achieved 30% more work than at any previous event of this kind.”

ICAO’s Plan for Environmental Protection

  • Endorsement of a global market-based measure (GMBM), the first-ever market-based measure adopted by an entire industry sector.
  • Recognition of the ongoing work to develop a new supersonic noise Standard for future aircraft, and that the possible certification of a supersonic aeroplane in the 2020-2025 timeframe.
  • Recognition of the development of a new non-volatile Particulate Matter (nvPM) emissions Standard for all turbofan and turbojet aircraft with rated thrust greater than 26.7kN (first-ever).
  • Support for the ICAO aspirational goals on CO2 emissions reduction and recognition of progress on all elements of the Basket of Measures.
  • Recognition of the development of a new global CO2 emissions certification Standard for New Type and In-production aeroplanes (first-ever).
  • Welcome the partnership agreement between ICAO and ACI that focuses on various cooperative initiatives for greener airports.
  • Recognition of significant achievements in assisting States to develop their State action plans for CO2 emissions reduction, leading to the submission of 101 State plans to ICAO
  • Request for advancing on emerging issues such as:

o    environmental aspects of aircraft end-of-life (e.g. aircraft recycling); and

o    climate change risk assessment on international aviation, including identification of adaptation measures

LAX Receives Carbon Accreditation from ACI

27Reducing emissions by 45 percent below 1990 levels until 2025

Los Angeles, California, September 27, 2016:  Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) was recognized at the 2016 Airports Council International (ACI) World Annual Conference for recently achieving Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) at Level 2 Reduction.  The ACA program recognizes airports worldwide that have committed to managing their carbon footprint through measurement and reduction with the ultimate goal of carbon neutrality.  The certification, announced at ACI’s world conference in Montreal, makes LAX one of only 14 U.S. airports to be accredited through the ACA program.

“LAX is honored to be a part of the Airport Carbon Accreditation program,” said Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) Chief Executive Officer Deborah Flint.  “Carbon footprint reduction drives many of the choices we make to create a world-class airport that is sustainable and environmentally-friendly. We look forward to realizing further carbon reductions through continued hard work and creating the right partnerships.”

Airport Carbon Accreditation reflects LAWA’s goal to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 45 percent below 1990 levels by 2025, and by 80 percent by 2050.  For 2015, LAX’s GHG emission levels are 24.1 percent below 1990 levels.  The total amount of CO2 emitted fell from 111,860 metric tons in 1990 to 84,883 in 2015. This reduction is attributable to a variety of reasons, including:

  • LAX’s new Central Utility Plant, which is estimated to achieve a six-percent lifetime emissions reduction;
  • LAWA’s Clean Fleet Program, which is the nation’s largest airport alternative-fuel fleet; and
  • LAWA’s Clean Construction Program, where an independent third party oversees a wide range of actions designed to reduce emissions.

ACA Level 2 Reduction accreditation requires airports to quantify their carbon output during a set time period, to submit carbon management plans, and to show progress towards achieving a reduced carbon footprint.  Independent verification is conducted biennially to monitor progress towards meeting emissions reduction goals, which are measured against metrics submitted to and approved by the ACA.
The ACA is an independent program administered by WSP/Parsons Brinckerhoff, which is responsible for enforcing accreditation criteria for accredited airports.  The Airport Carbon Accreditation Program was launched in partnership with ACI-North America, in September 2014.

Neste: Renewable Diesel to power County of Sacramento’s Fleet in California

Sacramento, August 11, 2016: Neste Renewable Diesel is now being used by the County of Sacramento, California. In moving to Neste Renewable Diesel, the County Sacramento joins California’s cleanest and greenest fleets that include the City of San FranciscoCity of Oakland, City of Walnut Creek, City of CarlsbadGoogle, and UPS.

In switching from petroleum diesel to Neste Renewable Diesel made from waste and residues, the County of Sacramento will reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its fleet by up to 80 percent. The County estimates that it will reduce greenhouses gases by approximately eight thousand tons annually. In addition, the use of Neste Renewable Diesel will reduce tailpipe emissions and so will contribute to improving the local air quality in Sacramento. Sacramento will use Neste Renewable Diesel in a range of heavy-duty vehicles including more than 400 municipal public works and specialty vehicles.

ATAG: Air Transport Supports Jobs and  Sustainable Economic Growth

Sustainable air transport will be based on the industry’s world-leading climate action plan

New York, July 19, 2016: Aviation is vital to the modern, globalised world, supporting millions of jobs and driving economic growth. But the benefits of connectivity must be protected with appropriate support from governments if the air transport sector is to fulfil its potential as a connector of people, trade and tourism and a driver of sustainable development. These are the conclusions drawn in a new report, Aviation: Benefits Beyond Borders, launched by the Air Transport Action Group (ATAG) at the United Nations High Level Political Forum’s ‘Sustainable Development Goal Business Day’ in New York.

Worldwide, aviation supports 62.7 million jobs and generates $2.7 trillion in gross domestic product (GDP). Not only does air transport provide significant economic benefits, but it also plays a major role in the social development of people and communities all over the globe, allowing people to travel for educational opportunities and cultural exchange. For example, 54 percent of all international tourists and 35 percent of international trade by value travels by air.

ATAG executive director, Michael Gill, says that the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at the United Nations highlights a number of goals that the international community should strive to achieve by 2030: “We found that air transport in some way supports 14 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, from decent work and economic growth to quality education and reduced inequalities. By continuing to grow in a sustainable manner, aviation can strive to be a force for good for many years to come.”

In the next 20 years, the report forecasts that aviation-supported jobs worldwide will increase to over 99 million and GDP to $5.9 trillion. The highest forecast growth will be in regions with fast-developing aviation sectors, such as Africa, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific. However, this will depend on governments supporting sustainable aviation growth, particularly with efficiency measures such as airspace modernisation, infrastructure development and capacity improvements and the continued liberalisation of the sector – a factor which has delivered a substantial reduction in airfares and access to air transport in those regions that have embraced it.

Gill comments that “a significant factor in our work on sustainable development is the industry’s world-leading climate action plan. We need support from governments around the world to agree on a key part of that plan at the upcoming International Civil Aviation Organization Assembly, where we hope an agreement can be reached on a global offsetting scheme for air transport. It is a vital part of our industry’s future role in helping to support development worldwide.”

‘Southern Africa Sustainable Fuels Initiative’ launched to ensure sustainable aviation biofuel supply

Johannesburg, July 15, 2016: Boeing, South African Airways (SAA) and low-cost carrier Mango today celebrated Africa’s first passenger flights with sustainable aviation biofuel. The flights coincided with Boeing’s 100th anniversary and centennial celebrations worldwide.

The SAA and Mango flights carried 300 passengers from Johannesburg to Cape Town on Boeing 737-800s using a blend of 30 percent aviation biofuel produced from Sunchem’s nicotine-free tobacco plant Solaris, refined by AltAir Fuels and supplied by SkyNRG.

“SAA is committed to a sustainable future and this flight highlights the bold steps we are taking to protect and preserve our environment while creating opportunities for the economic development of our people,” said Musa Zwane, acting CEO of SAA. “We are pleased to join the ranks of global airlines who have made a commitment to a better and cleaner way of flying.”

“It is fitting that on our 100 year anniversary we are flying on fuels ‎that not only power the flight, but ensure a sustainable future for our industry,” said Miguel Santos, managing director for Africa, Boeing International. “This project is a great example of environmental stewardship that delivers economic and health benefits to South Africa.”

Fuels collaboration

In 2013, Boeing and SAA launched their sustainable aviation fuels collaboration and in 2014, Project Solaris became the first focus project that converted oil from the Solaris plant seed into bio-jet fuel. In 2015, farms in Limpopo Province of South Africa, from which the biofuel for today’s flights was sourced, achieved certification from the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB), one of the strongest sustainability standards in the world. RSB certification provides a model for expansion of Project Solaris to larger scale production. The initiative also focuses on South Africa’s goals for public health, rural development and economic and employment opportunities for farmers by increasing production of Solaris and other feedstocks on under-utilized land.

The partners also launched a stakeholder and sustainability plan called the Southern Africa Sustainable Fuel Initiative (SASFI) to ensure a long-term domestic fuel supply for SAA and other regional fuel users. The goal is to scale-up over the next several years to gain additional biofuel capacity. If successful, farmers will be able to tap into local and global demand for certified feedstock without adverse impact to food supplies, fresh water or land use.

Studies have shown that sustainably produced aviation biofuel emits 50 to 80 percent lower carbon emissions through its life cycle than fossil jet fuel. Airlines around the world have conducted more than 2,500 passenger flights using various forms of aviation biofuel since it was approved for commercial use in 2011.

Boeing, Embraer Unveil Newest ecoDemonstrator Aircraft

E170 airplane to test technologies to boost fuel efficiency and cut carbon emissions

Rio de Janeiro, July 7, 2016: ecoDemonstrator Aircraft – Boeing and Embraer S.A. unveiled the next phase of the Boeing ecoDemonstrator program today. The program expands Boeing and Embraer’s cooperation agreement and will test technologies to improve airplane environmental performance and accelerate their introduction into the marketplace.

An Embraer E170 will serve as the flying testbed and will feature advanced environmental technologies that will undergo operational testing in Brazil during August and September.

The ecoDemonstrator flights will test several technologies designed to reduce carbon emissions, fuel use and noise including:

  • LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology using lasers to measure air data parameters such as true airspeed, angle of attack and outside air temperature. LIDAR shows potential to increase air data reliabilityciency by complementing current sensors, which could lead to further innovations that improve fuel efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.
  • An “ice phobic” paint designed to reduce icing and help prevent accumulation of dirt and bugs due to its low adhesive property. The special paint can help operators save water by reducing the need for frequent aircraft washing.
  • A new wing design with improved slats to reduce noise on takeoff and approach.
  • Special sensors and air visualization techniques near the wing surface to better understand in-flight aerodynamics. This analysis could lead to further innovations to improve fuel efficiency and reduce carbon emissions, such as new wing designs.
  • A Brazilian-produced biofuel blend made up of 10 percent bio-kerosene and 90 percent fossil kerosene, the maximum mixture according to international standards. Studies have shown that sustainably produced aviation biofuel emits 50 to 80 percent lower carbon emissions through its life cycle than fossil jet fuel.

The ecoDemonstrator tests illustrate Boeing and Embraer’s continued investments to improve fuel efficiency and environmental performance of aircraft and meet the new carbon emissions standard announced by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) earlier this year.

The ecoDemonstrator collaboration expands a relationship that began in 2012 when Boeing and Embraer signed a cooperation agreement to benefit their customers, their companies and the global aviation industry. Since then, Boeing and Embraer have supported Embraer’s KC-390 defense aircraft program and improved runway safety by providing commercial customers with tools to reduce runway excursions. Last year Boeing and Embraer opened a joint biofuel research center in São José dos Campos to perform biofuel research and coordinate research with Brazilian universities and other institutions.

To date, the ecoDemonstrator program has tested more than 50 technologies, using a Next-Generation 737-800 (2012), 787 (2014) and 757 (2015) as flying testbeds.
