Amsterdam Schiphol, June 19, 2015: 35 electric buses started operating today at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to transport travelers from aircraft to gate. Each bus has its own charging point at the airport, making Schiphol the biggest charging station for electric buses in Europe.
Jos Nijhuis, Schiphol Group CEO & President, marked the occasion by connecting a bus at the charging point. ‘Schiphol aims to be one of the most sustainable airports in the world. In everything we do we try to be cleaner, smarter, more economical and more social. It’s absolutely fantastic that the buses are charged via their own solar panels,’ said Nijhuis.
Special design: The buses were designed especially for and in collaboration with the airport. The buses have a smaller battery tailored for the required action radius at Schiphol, allowing for spacious seating and additional baggage space. This, together with a design focusing on materials, colors, seats, poles and wrist straps has resulted in a chic look and generous traveler comfort.
